Ultrasonic Testing

Applied Design Labs has been building and testing ultrasonic devices since our founding.  We regularly test ultrasonic pest repellers from several manufacturers.  We also test devices for some catalog merchants interested in the quality of the products they carry.

Why have your product tested?

Firstly, the only equipment that can measure ultrasound waves at the frequencies that repel rodents is expensive and obscure. We use a Bruel & Kjaer Model 2231 sound level meter with type 4136 microphone which can measure to 80khz.A Radio Shack sound level meter only works to 20khz but the frequencies associated with pest repelling go to 60khz.You cannot hear anything of what is going on.

Secondly, the market is flooded with bogus devices that either do not put out any ultrasonic energy or that put out the wrong frequencies or that are just weak. These manufacturers count on the consumer either writing off their small investment and throwing the product away or better yet, having the mice move out at the same time but for other reasons, then praising the device for imagined efficacy. Many of these manufacturers do not own any testing equipment.

Foreign manufacturers tend to copy each other and put unsupported and bogus claims of effectiveness against all sorts of insects on their packaging.Effects have been reported on some species but many, many more seem to be totally unaffected by ultrasound.None of the insect effectiveness has been established to the satisfaction of the Federal Trade Commission or the EPA.The EPA issues “establishment numbers” but does not conduct any tests of its own. Many manufacturers falsely tout this number as some sort of proof of effectiveness.
